Corneal Cross-Linking

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) to slow the progression of keratoconus.

If we think of the eye as a camera, the cornea is the glass at the front of the lens. It is not only the clear window through which light enters the eye; it also provides most of the eye's focusing power.

Corneal disease can cause clouding, distortion and scarring, and may eventually lead to blindness.

Common corneal conditions

  • Keratoconus: the cornea gradually thins and bulges into a cone shape, distorting vision
  • Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy
  • Bullous keratopathy

Treatment for keratoconus

Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is the established treatment to halt the progression of keratoconus. National Eye Center uses the FDA-approved system from Avedro Inc., USA, and offers complete care for corneal disease.

Keratoconus is diagnosed and monitored with a Galilei scan, which maps the shape and thickness of the cornea.
