Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser procedure that corrects myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. It was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the predecessor of LASIK. PRK can be performed with or without Contoura Vision.
The PRK procedure
- Preparation of the corneal surface layer
- Removal of the surface layer (epithelium)
- Laser reshaping of the cornea
- Initial healing
- Eye protection
- Medication and follow-up
Recovery
The surface cells of the cornea take about a week to grow back. Blurred vision is common during the first one to two weeks, and sight improves gradually over the following weeks. It usually takes two to six weeks for vision to clear, and up to three months for it to stabilise fully.
